It was a nice day fishing with the boys this morning. I should say helping the boys with their fishing because I did not get much fishing in myself -- I was helping one or the other most of the morning. They posted their photos earlier this evening.
They quit just before lunch and allowed me to get in a few casts myself. I tried my trusty floating rapala with no luck. So, I switched to a gold Mepps Aglia size 1. That was the right move. I got a hit on the first cast but nothing hooked. On the third cast I got this one. I caught another smaller one, but did not take a photo. Not bad for about 15 minutes of fishing. That gold aglia works well with the smallies -- my only complaint with this lure is line twist that eventually bungles the line and ruins casting (maybe I need some better swivels).
Notice the rubber net in the photo. I just got it the other day. Don Miller, the Sr. Wildlife Biologist for NH, convinced me to get it and retire my old string net. It's much better for the fish because it protects their slime coating. It's also much easier to release them. These nets are not cheap, but it seemed like the right thing to do since I generally release what I catch (to grow bigger).
Also, on our hike to the pond, we observed a grouse and her chicks. She made a hissing sound to protect her babies. It was a surprising sound for a bird! In case you are wondering, no we did not intend to bother the birds -- we were as surprised as they were when we stumbled onto them.
All in all, it was a nice day out in nature with the boys!
