Last Sunday, on Fathers Day, was the maiden voyage of my new canoe: An Old Town Osprey 155 from L.L. Bean. I've been dying to get a fishing boat, but that's not "practical" for me right now: no $$$, no way to tow it, no place to store it, etc. So, I changed course and got this canoe. The canoe arrived on my doorstep only about 5 days after ordering from their website. Amazing service from L.L. Bean!
Let me tell you... I LOVE it! I am still wanting that fishing boat, but this canoe is great right now and will be a great companion to a bigger boat because you can get to excellent fishing locations.
The Osprey's maiden voyage was on nearby Storrs Pond. Robin, Sam, Curtis, and I (yes, 4 of us) fit fairly comfortably fit in that canoe - It has 3 seats and Curtis sat on the floor in front of Robin.
This was not an official fishing trip. However... I added some rod holders to the canoe and trolled a floating rapala on a long line behind the canoe. Sam was rowing up front and I was sure to direct him to every shady spot, structure, and point on the pond in the hopes of hooking a fish.
Sure enough... just after we crossed a point the rod got a good tug. After a short but dramatic fight, the pond gave me a nice little largemouth bass. Or, as Curtis calls it, a Bigmouth Bass.
It was a nice trip out with the family and a successful maiden voyage of the Osprey. Always a nice bonus to catch a fish when you are not trying very hard!
PS Sorry no picture of the fish. I was afraid to bring my camera aboard for fear of getting soaked and ruined somehow. I'll bring it next time.
