just started casting out toward the shore, when retrieving hooked what turned out to be maybe about a 1.5lb smallmouth. then approx 20ft off the boat, the rod jerked hard and the line ran. some 12 minutes later i boated the first (and largest) of 6 pike caught over the next couple of hours. seems the northern picked up on, and hit the bass i was reeling in with my intitial cast.
