went out for an evening with some army buddies just before i ETSed back to the states to give a try at some zander...the much, MUCH larger and more aggressive sibling to the north american walleye and sauger. the bite was aggressive, and the run was strong. fish headed downstream and was quite difficult to turn. when i had it within 10-15ft, it ran again upstream. not to sure how long the fight was...maybe almost 20 minutes. between me and 3 others, we landed 19 zander. we alson got spooled twice, and had our line (17lb test) broken several times as well. we saw several pike being taken on shore, and suspected this to be a possible cause.
all of the zander taken were better than 15lbs...but mine was NOT the biggest that day either!
what fun would it be if this species got into american rivers, given it can tolerate much warmer and saltier water than walleye??? (...and it eats just as well too!)

Wow! That's an incredible catch. I was feeling good about myself for catching a 3 pound walleye on Sunday. That guy gave a good fight. I could just imagine what a zander 10 times its size would do.
I've heard stories about restaurants here claiming to serve walleye, but secretly replacing with zander. The taste must be very similar (and good) Did you eat any of your catch?
