The cool weather has kept the pickerel biting. I took a few casts, and landed this little guy. I normally prefer the winter bite, but it was so much fun this year I couldn't resist.

They are fairly common in some areas. There are 2 kinds in NC - chain pickerel, and redfin. Redfins are smaller, but also very beautiful fish. Chain pickerel can grow large. I think state record is around 7 lbs.

It all depends on your area. Here in NC Triangle, Shearon Harris is a good lake for them. Some slow creeks along the Haw River also have plenty of pickerel. Good luck!

Henry, never caught pickerel before but it's on my list. What areas in NC can I catch pickerel?
