28.5" / 9.2 lb. Bowfin caught by Henry V fishing on Thursday March 13, 2014 at 14:02 near Chapel Hill in Orange County, North Carolina (NC), United States North America

Rarely has a fishing season started with so many great catches. I caught two LM Bass over 8 lbs last weekend, and today I landed my first big Bowfin of the year. Mind you, we consider a trophy Bowfin to be 10+ lbs, but this one was close. She was 28.5 inches, and 9.2 lbs. And she had a lot of fight in her, with the water still being cold. She did not give up for over 10 minutes, and I was worried because I was only fishing with 10 lb test. Still, I landed her, then i released her to swim upstream, away from the other anglers, so she could spawn.

This is Cackalacky fishing at its finest.

Albert - no, not time yet for my special Mepps technique. That's for after the spawn.

Bassassin- the little Bowfin are hard to find. They don't really chase lures until the fish are about 12-14" long, or 2 yrs old. I've never seen one landed under 10", and I've caught hundreds of Bowfin.
It's weird. I imagine bass, catfish, eagles, snapping turtles, and herons eat quite a few.
I know gators like to eat them, too. I say leave them in water, because we stock out lakes with so many bass,
And something has to keep the bass in check or they never grow big enough.
It's called "stunting" - too many of one species, and all fish are smaller in average.

The Fishing Gods are Loving you right now ..lol Good C+R we need more ppl like that .. To an extent tho cs sometimes the mid range (1 lb-2.5 lbs) ones that are most commonly caught need to be harvested to balance things out but I don't know if the same applies for Rivers and Streams .
