38.0" / 18.0 lb. Red Drum caught by Mark Clements fishing on Friday February 20, 2009 at 09:54 8.75 km from Wilmington in New Hanover County, North Carolina (NC), United States North America using a white new penny shrimp a Grub by Berkley

I went over to the island around 10:00 am that morning to see if the drum had shown up. My friend had told me the day before that his dad had went over thier and had caught seven drum that morning on a mid riseing tide. Each one was around 30". So I could not stand it, I had to go see for myself. At first I thought that I was just wasteing my time, with the water as cold as it still is, so I casted and casted walking the beach in hopes of finding the big ones.I almost gave up and then he hit. I was fishing with a penn 440 light weight rod with 10# test line. He ripped out the line with little effort, and got into a slue just off the beach. This was not good, with the power of the water rolling over the slue a fish can rest at the bottom for some time. My only hope was to get him out of this area to open water and then try and wear him down. But with such a light rod this would be a task. I kept the presure on and all at once he moved over the top of the slue back into shollow water where I was able to land him. 38" man what a fish! the fight took about 20 minuts and my arms were gitting tired.I removed the hook and watched this really nice fish swim back into the ocean. Maybe one day I will call him up again.
