6.4 lb. Largemouth Bass caught by Arizona Wildlife Outfitters fishing in Arizona on 03/24/09
22.3" / 6.4 lb. Largemouth Bass caught by Arizona Wildlife Outfitters fishing on Tuesday March 24, 2009 at 12:00 near Meadview in Mohave County, Arizona (AZ), United States North America using a shad colored 1/2 oz a Crankbait

I was fishing with a friend at South Cove on Lake Mead and it was high noon. It was the first trip of the year and was basically just going to be a four hour glorified boat ride to make sure the Skeeter was working good.

I threw a deep diving shad colored crankbait over a ridge that was extending about 30 feet into the water from the shoreline. The top of the shelf was about one foot under the surface.

The lure came over the top, banging rocks and stirring up debris. When it dropped off the shelf, I saw a swirl and the fight was on.

Fortunately the lady bass ran into open open and within a few minutes she was next to the boat where she was lipped by my buddy. We had no net in the boat since it was the first trip of the year.

On the Rapala scales she weighed 6 lbs. 4 oz. She was 22 3/4 inches long and had a girth of 15 3/4 inches.

After the obligatory photos and measurements, I gave her a kiss on the nose ALA Jimmy Houston and released her back into the lake.

I should note that on this end of Lake Mead the average largemouth bass is from 12-14 inches and weighs from 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 lbs.

We caught three other largemouth that day and that's exactly what they were!

This is my personal largest largemouth bass. My previous personal best on Lake Mead was a lunker that pushed the scales to just over 5 lbs.

In my 23 years of fishing out of South Cove on Lake Mead as an individual or in tournaments I have personally seen just two largemouth that were larger. One weighed 6 lbs 10 oz and one weighed just over 7 lbs.

Though folks catch a lot larger fish than this one all over the country, in this neck of the desert this is a fish of a lifetime!
