90.0" / 100.0 lb. Tarpon caught by Billfish Sportfishing fishing on Friday April 17, 2009 at 12:43 4.87 km from Islamorada in Monroe County, Florida (FL), United States North America

Friend Tony battles a a big tarpon in the dark of night. It's really something to see them jump with the moonlight shimmering off their mercurial hued scales.

Joe,
I'm going to add a photo of Capt. Gregorio Fuentes... delete it after you view it. Keep in mind that he's the model for the 'Old Mand and the Sea' and was Hemingway's captain and friend for 3 decades.

If anyone really wants to grab a BIG tarpon.. I'd recommend either Capt. Kenny Knudson or Capt. Vic Gaspeny out of Bud N' Mary's Marina in Islamorada, FL.
I'm allowed the use of Richard Stanczyk's skiff (owner of B N' M's).. so the photos that you see are what we catch on our own. Late March through June is the prime time for tarpon in this area. Most of these fish are on the larger size since we fish the night tides drifting crabs in channels that abut the flats in the 'back country' areas off of Islamorada. We often get up at 12- 3 AM to ensure that all facets necessary to catch the big Silver Kings are in place. Often, we'll simply fish from dusk to dawn if the fishing is good. Some of the bigger specimens can take well over an hour to land on 20- 30 lb class tackle. They are an amazing fish with brute strength, amazing acrobatic abilities, and sheer beauty that borders on the ethereal. Seeing one of these fish jump at night with the moonlight reflecting off of its scales leaves a memory that will never be erased.
