14.0" / 1.5 lb. Bowfin caught by Henry V fishing on Tuesday May 05, 2009 at 16:25 near Apex in Wake County, North Carolina (NC), United States North America using a Crawfish by YUM Baits

I met Mike and Ian this afternoon so that I could check out the Bowfin action at a new hot spot. As soon as I parked my car a big stray dog walked out of the woods, a thunder cloud exploded over our heads, and the sky opened up. Mike and I went to see if Ian was still alive. Then we dried off and started fishing.

The water was deep, dark, and clear. I know it doesn’t make sense, but that’s how it was. Mike said “These fish are mean. It’s like hooking trucks on I-40.” We spotted a few fish herding and eating baitfish, so we walked downstream. The first hour was slow. I tried a few different lures and a few different color plastic baits but nothing seemed to work. Finally, I tied on a crawdad and caught this small male Bowfin on the first or second cast. A second larger Bowfin trashed my crawdad soon thereafter, but I didn’t land the fish.

A third Bowfin went after my yellow creature bait as it was coming through the weeds. I was in a perfect location to observe the strike. The Bowfin actually curled so it could bite the lure from the front. I heard they preferred a frontal attack, but had never seen it. Well, it’s true. But I didn’t hook the fish because I was standing there with my mouth open.

A fourth Bowfin smashed my spinner bait on the next cast. I didn’t get a hook set, then I lost the lure. I tied on a new creature bait and hooked a good Bowfin. This one weighed about four pounds, and I fought it to the bank and landed it. I removed the hook and the fish went crazy, jumped out of my hand, and went into the water.

That’s five Bowfin, and only one small male in the bag, so to speak. So I started talking to Ian about literature while I was casting around, and the craziest thing happened….. (see next catch)
