using
a red & white daredevil (2oz)
a Casting & Trolling Spoon
by Acme Tackle Company
saw the fish patrolling the inlet shallows, so i cast out far and reeling inwards near the drops, then pulled the spoon rapidly down shore and away like a fish that just sensed a predator. the musky reacted immediately and hooked itself.

well, all pike, pickerell, and muskies are freshwater barracuda...so they trigger off of motion. the way most predaters chase when prey runs away., if i'd drawn it at them, they'd get spooked, because that's NOT the way viable prey behaves. if i got a strike, it would be merely a defensive one (protecting a spawning bed?).

Good story... appreciate the description of the technique. I can see why that would prompt a strike. And thanks for releasing... wish you had a photo! Posted by Joe Pych

well, i was pushing the fish's buttons, and playing on its instincts as the pinnacle predator.
