Fishing Report

1.0 lb. Largemouth Bass caught by Henry V fishing on Sunday June 14, 2009 at 10:47 in B Everett Jordan Lake near Apex in Wake County, North Carolina (NC), United States North America using a Jerk Bait

Here's how it went down.....
Joe and I dragged my canoe out early and headed for the swamp. We were both worried a big Bowfin might flip us over into a nest of water moccasins. We found out soon enough.....

We paddled back to the "cove" where the beavers finished the Great Dam of Jordan. The water was clear and deep, with two layers. The bottom layer was beneath 4 feet of hydrilla, the top 1 foot above it. The bass were hanging around in holes and near submerged logs. I caught one, Joe caught two. We paddled around.

We paddled back. Joe caught another little bass, and then I cast my bubble gum colored swim shad into a space between two trees. I said "Joe, look..." A massive fish was pushing up a wake about ten feet away. It was heading straight for my lure. I retrieved a bit, watched the wake, and stopped the lure. I twitched it. It vanished.

I set the hook. The fight was brutal. The fish tried going under a log or two but I turned it each time. At this point, our canoe was wedged against an old tree and I was using the tree as leverage against the fish. I finally got the Bowfin near the canoe and it tried going under. I turned it. Joe handed me a grip. I inserted it, grabbed the fish's jaw, and lifted. Pandemonium. My wrist twists, I let go. The fish is still hooked. It jumps one more time and throws the hook. I see a flash in the water - maybe the grip fell out. Bubbles and disappointment.

Now I know how the Pitt men's basketball team felt losing that game last year on the final shot. Joe guessed the fish to be between 8-10 lbs.

I have to quote our buddy BrentC..."trout wrist". I don't have too much room to speak however. I too lost a grip to a bowfin in that same cursed place. Great story though.

I had a massive top-water strike right in the direction your looking in that photo on Saturday. I never had a chance to see what did it but it was startling.

I think you pansy boys need to do some wrist strengthening exercises to help you grip the grips ;)

I think a net is a must especially with the big fish
And when your leverage is not the best in a canoe.

2nd grip tool the bowfins claimed there this year. I think I'll bring the net next time ;)
