40.3" Red Drum caught by Devon Knauff fishing on Tuesday July 21, 2009 at 11:20 2.75 km from Navarre in Yolo County, Florida (FL), United States North America using a gulp shrimp a Grub by Berkley

Devon and I went out to East Bay for a morning of fish hunting. We started jigging around all the crab pots that are in the bay.
Devon caught the first fish of the day, a 5lb sailcat.
We ended up catching 6 more sail cats ranging 4-7lbs. Not the fish we wanted to catch, but bent the rods and took line just the same, so we were happy.
Devon said he thought he was getting too much sun and maybe we should go. So we packed up and headed for the boat launch.
On our way, I spotted 3 lonely seagulls diving and feeding so we eased the boat close enough to get in a few casts. I hooked up imediately with a blue fish, then 4 nice speckled trout followed. Devon caught only a really small sail cat at this stop. Until he threw out one more time.
He hooked something and it started screaming drag...so much that we had to chase the fish down with the trolling motor. I caught a short glimps of the fish and saw that it was about a 20lb red...or so I thought.
After about 25-30 minutes, the fish gave us a good look at her. You could hear my jaw hit the bottom of the boat. She was closer to 50lbs!!
I know Devon had to be nervous because I started coaching him on how to fight the fish and how to manuver his rod in a rather aggressive manner.
Despite all the yelling...he did a most awsome job. He was sticking his rod in the water, running all around the boat, under the motor at least 10 times.
About 40 minutes later, and 14 times to the boat and out again..we had her in the net.
I didn't have a camera, and left my cell phone at home. Go figure!! The fish measured 40 1/4", and had a girth that was larger than my thigh, and I'm 5'10", 250lbs, just to give you an idea.
He did a great job and I couldn't be prouder!!! He did it all...100% by himself from the cast, to the hookup, to the fighting and running around! Did I mention he did this on 10lb tackle?
My only regret is that I had no camera!!
AWSOME job son!!!! Bigger than any red dad's caught! Proud day for me!!!!
