14.0 in. Rainbow Trout caught by Buddy Seiner fishing in Deerfield Lake in South Dakota on 03/01/08

Late season ice fishing at it's best. Early March, Deerfield Reservoir, 50 degrees outside, and I was fishing in 40 ft of water. Trout were showing up all over on my vexilar, hitting anywhere from 5 ft down to 40 ft down. What a blast!
Most people aren't aware that rainbow trout can be some of the most entertaining fish to bring through the ice. Because they are cold water fish, they are active all year long, and with a fishing season that never closes, South Dakota is the perfect place to bag a few bow's or brookies. No wonder I never have to leave this state to experience great outdoor activities. :)

Thanks again Albert! Caught a lot of smaller fish like this on that trip, but I go to that lake for the potential big boys. Four brook trout over 10 lbs were caught in Deerfield back in 2006. Didn't hear of anyone catching any that big this year, hopefully I'll change that next year! Posted by South Dakota Tourism over 13 years ago |
