Fishing Report

I stopped at the Lower Little Creek impoundment early this morning. I was thinking I might take a few casts then go into my office and work on my book. Another angler was fishing there when I arrived, and he said it had been slow. I was thinking of keeping it short.

I hooked a big Bowfin on the first cast, lost it quickly, and then I landed 4 b@ss in the next few minutes. The action slowed, but as I was leaving a HUGE Bowfin surfaced in the main channel. It jumped out of the water three consecutive times, tail walking and rolling like a hooked fish. I looked at the other angler and his line was slack. The fish was simply crazy.

So I rigged up again. The other angler hooked the big one and lost it, and then I hooked a big one that broke my Rapala SR-7 in half and got away. And then I hooked two little Bowfin. Now, that may seem like a let down, but it's not. One was a 14" male Bowfin, the other a 17" female (this one). At that size, the fish were between 2-3 years in age, and that is really good news: it means the local Bowfin are spawning and their young are making it to adulthood.
