50.0 lb. Snapping Turtle caught by Turtle Fisherman fishing on Tuesday July 28, 2009 at 22:17 in East Pond 4.95 km from Smithfield in Somerset County, Maine (ME), United States North America using a Baitfish

The guy in the next cabin was live lining some minnows trying to catch bass and instead pulled up this gigantic snapping turtle. This was by far the biggest turtle I've ever seen outside a zoo. The shell was bigger than a trash can lid. 50 lbs is an estimate and would not be surprised if it was a lot bigger than that. Poor guy ended up with a big hook in his mouth (nobody willing to try to work the hook out).

Caorey - thanks for sharing that story. This one did not give any fight either. Just had to work it in slowly so the line did not break.

I just caught a 40-50 pound alligator snapping turtle today (Peachtree City, GA, on a private lake), I was fishing for catfish with chicken liver and this thing grabbed it. The turtle pulled hard for about 5 seconds and I thought I had a big fish, then it was all weight and no fight. I hooked him good, and wanted to get it out with pliers; so I tried to drag him on the shoreline, but he refused; dug it's claws in the bank, pulled back and snapped my heavy line.

I definitely will not be swimming in my lake anymore, he could have easily fit my entire hand in his mouth.

No pictures, I just found out about this site, looking for familiar stories. My first time catching a snapper.

No, this was clear fresh water. I was shocked by the size. This would have made a lot of soup!

PS I did not catch it - it was caught by guy at next dock over. When I saw it I had o get a picture.

That's a nice size Turtle, buddy. You must of been fishing in Saltwater or brackish water to catch a good size turtle like that. Where I'm from that's considered at good size for some Turtle Stew, Joe.

He was using some heavy braid and pulled it in very slowly. The turtle did not fight and went with the flow. Probably just wanted that hook out.
