Fishing Report

21.0" Bowfin caught by Henry V fishing on Monday August 03, 2009 at 16:30 near Chapel Hill in Orange County, North Carolina (NC), United States North America using a lure by Mepps

Joe always says "I know there are fins in that hole by the bridge" but we never catch any there. That changed today. This 21" slugger grabbed my lure in deep water and put up a valiant fight.

It was hot, humid, and worth every second of it. This is Bowfin number 28 on the season. I still can't believe the year I am having down here.

Henry V,
There must be more than one John Brown on here because I didnt post that question about "where's the triangle area". But I dont know where the triangle is either. And strangely I DO live just outside Hickory, though.
But I would love to meet some fisherman from this area and learn about some new game fish. So, where is the triangle? I'm going to the coast in South Carolina tomorrow for the weekend to do some fishing, so I certainly dont mind traveling a little for fishing.
I hope to hear back from you.

Oh yeah, about eating them. Because they are top level predators, they accumulate a lot of toxins (mercury, etc). So I wouldn;t eat one unless it came from clean water. The taste is another story. Some people like them, but that's because they know how to cook them. If you don;t know how to cook them, then stay away, because the meat gets mushy if you don;t prepare it right.

John,

That's a small one. The IGFA world record is 20+ lbs. Bowfin are the South's best kept secret, an awesome, fierce game fish. They have the teeth of a pike, the aggression of a bass, and the athletic fighting ability of a trout. Just wait until you hook one, you'll see. It's great. See also www.bowfinanglers.com for tips, photos, etc.

Are you in the NC Triangle area? If so, me and the other Bowfin guys will be happy to take you out and introduce you to the world's toughest (and oldest) game fish.

Nice size fish. I've never heard of a bowfin. But I just moved to North Carolina a few weeks ago. How big do they get? Do people eat them?
