a wacky 5" senko watermelon/red flake
a Worm
by Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits
This was the trophy of the night.
I was a little strong in my cast to the trunk of a fallen tree and put it over the other side. I reeled in and luckily the hook was facing away as I dragged the wacky rigged senko over the log. It dropped beautifully into the water - where I wanted to cast in the first place, but with a lot less splash.
That worm was only in the water just a split second when the line started to move away. I set the hook and the fight was on. The drag screamed. This was a strong fish. She dove back under the tree and pulled my kayak 20 feet to the tree and the momentum carried me over it.
Since I started 'yak fishing this year, I am really liking it. But the downside is you can't control the boat and fight the fish at the same time.
So, now I am on the other side of the log and my line is wrapped around it. I can't control the boat and this fish is still fighting hard. I thought I was going to lose it. Fortunately, she slowly pulled me back where I could reach my hand to give the log a shove to push the kayak to the right side of the it.
She made a couple more runs that tested my cheap reel. Finally got her in. The length was 20"+ and I am guessing the weight of 4.5 lbs based on this. I would have guessed 5 pounds, but I think that's heavy for the length.
My biggest bass yet from Storrs Pond. And there are still bigger ones in there. This one was released unharmed to grow bigger.
(hope you guys like the long story)
