This is a tale of two Bowfin. I met Joe for some fishing action before dusk. Little did I know that Mike was down on the Haw River sneaking up on some Bowfin. I started fishing topwater and a small Bowfin grabbed my lure on one of the first casts. I got it near the bank when it inexplicably spit my hook. Moments later, Mike sent Joe a text saying he was into some fins down the Haw. I got nervous because we are only 3 points apart atop the Bowfin Anglers Group Finner of the Year contest. So I kept fishing. A few casts later, my lure hit the rocks and a Bowfin jumped out of the water to grab it. The fish missed my lure. And then I landed this bass, but I was worried that Mike caught a big fin to pass me in the points. And then the worst thing that could happen came to pass: I heard a cannonball fall into the water. The nasty beaver that lives downstream showed up and it was slapping its tail to run us off. Joe gave up and left and I kept fishing. And then the bats came, hitting my lure as it crossed the water. I gave up - Mike would get the fin, and I lost two. I was mad as hell and ready to jump in the water and have it out with that beaver once and for all. But then good news came down the wire: Mike also lost his Bowfin. In the end, the Bowfin won. They always do.

Good story. There's always the unknown x-factors when fishing. Man v. Nature. Good luck in the contest!
