Fishing Report

14.0" Largemouth Bass caught by John Douglas fishing on Saturday October 10, 2009 at 11:30 in Lake Gordonsville near Gordonsville in Orange County, Virginia (VA), United States North America using a White Red Eye a Spinnerbait by Strike King Lure Company

I caught this beauty at Bowlers Mill Lake (Lake Gordonsville)yesterday morning. This is a pretty little lake of around 80 acres, thick with lilly pads and blow downs. The weather didn't really cooperate, this was the only fish my buddy and I caught in the five hours we were there. This lake calls for a seperate 6 dollar permit we picked up quite easily with a short stop at the Gordonsville Sport Supply on South High St. in town. It's a good shop with a convienient live bait supply.

The lake itself is extremely stained due to the vegetation breakdown, the water a very dark blackish-brown with a muddy bottom covered in coonstail. 18ft at the deepest near the spillway, it's a shallow lake, good for this time of year as the LMB start to fatten up. We were plagued with intermittent rain showers for almost three hours and the wind decided to start gusting up to at least 15 to 18mph...the weather guy left that part out. Haha.

This dude smacked a White Strike King Red Eye (the one with the bleeding minnow design on the blade) about 6ft off the bank, near a beaver dam and a big blow down, inset from the point of the lake's one substantial cutback. He gave me a good fight and made the trip really worth it. Anyone wanting a nice small lake that is not heavily pressured should give this one a try, especially this time of year as the pads start to die back. Make sure you take some flippin' outfits with heavy weights to punch through the cover and some crappie gear wont hurt, I talked with a crappie man weathering it out with us (the only other guy on the water for five hours) and he said the slabs there are also quite nice.

Looks like a solid lake. At least you managed to boat at least one fish and avoid the shutout. I was unfortunately shutout today......
