Fishing Report

28.0" / 7.1 lb. Bowfin caught by Henry V fishing on Tuesday October 13, 2009 at 12:15 near Chapel Hill in Orange County, North Carolina (NC), United States North America using a Chatter Bait

I had a run in with this big female fin last week at Lower Little Creek. She followed my spinner back to the bank and just sat there. She then opened her mouth and grabbed it after I made a figure 8 with the lure. I set the hook, and she was gone. I don;t know why, but this fish looks like her. I have other reasons to believe it's the same fish. I hooked her about five feet from where we last met (are Bowfin territorial? I don't know - but they do hang out in certain areas for a while). And she grabbed - mauled is a better word - a similar bait: this time it was a chatterbait with a bright blade. The fight was just awesome, and I won. She measured 28" and weighed a clean 7 lbs, 14 oz. She had a wide girth and looked like she had been eating quite well.

I've caught some big pike in the Passaic River at Elmwood Park. I caught a few from the bank in front of the high school - they are usually in the shallows after the spawn (late April/early May). The best way to go there, however, is in a boat. There are some great spots downstream near the old flea market building, and the LM and SM bass are huge there.

Fairfield is the "Two Bridges" area, right? I heard it was good, but never tried it. I scouted it once, and it looked like a canoe would work well. I know some guys catch pike from kayaks there. I heard that one of the local tackle shops sells a special map for pike in the Passaic, but I can;t remember the name of the store (I patronized Tommy's place in Paterson back in the day).

I also like fishing the river at Little Falls, just above RT 46. You can wade some of it, the smallmouth bass are awesome, and I would occasionally get a pike there. Jointed Rapala minnow was my lure of choice. I haven;t seriously fished up there in a few years, but I did sneak out for one hour this spring and got a SM Bass in Elmwood Park (see my catch report).
