35.0" / 13.3 lb. Northern Pike caught by David Adams fishing on Sunday March 30, 2008 at 12:34 in Lake Champlain 2.14 km from Alburg in Grand Isle County, Vermont (VT), United States North America using a Live Bait

This was the fish that I had been waiting for all ice season and it came on the last day. I was with a group of VTFWD work buddies who were new to the pike fishing scene. So I took them out and put them on some fish. All season I have been catching big fish but nothing in the teens, and the goal of the season was to get a teenager!

We fished a spot that i usually do pretty well in, and had flags all day. It seemed that they came every 20-40 minutes or so...some was the bait...we were using HUGE HUGE shiners...and some were fish...I was able to get some newbies to ice fishing some nice fish.

This was a fish that I got the the flag and the spool was just running to beat the band, I grabed the line and was extreemly supprised to feel the weight on the other end...It felt big...I played the fish for about 5 minutes but it seemed so much longer...as it got closer to the hole, it would make long runs. Finally she had had enough and I was able to get her to the hole and up and out....It made my day seeing that fish... this was a great way to end 53 days of ice fishing with this being the last fish of the season...I was on the boat the followng saturday looking for trout....I LOVE TO FISH...

On a side note: Something I was pretty proud ouf was the fact that that fish was worth $100 dollars in an all season pool i enter every year, but seeing that fish, and how pretty it looked, it was not worth the money to kill it, so we got some great picks and sent it back down the hole to be caught again. The money would have been nice, but releasing a fish like that is priceless!

We should all follow the catch and release mantra. Good for you. The sport will survive if we all follow your lead!

David, that's a great story! I think you win the prize even though you did not get the c-note. What a fantastic way to end the ice fishing season (and to usher in the open water season). Thanks for sharing this.

Great catch and some real sportsmanship.
One of most beautiful pikes I've seen.
