I should know better than go fishing on Mother's Day ;-).

The cat woke me up at 4:50 a.m. this morning. So, might as well go fishing. I headed over to a nearby spot on the Mascoma River. I've not done a lot of fishing on the Mascoma, but it's reputed to be one of the best trout fisheries in the area. Very popular among fly fishermen.

Not being a fly fisherman, I situated myself just below the fly fishing only stretch figuring that the new stocked fish would be in that area.

An absolutely beautiful morning. Just fantastic to be outside, even though the morning chill started at 34 degrees. And a beautiful river, too. As you can see from the photo above, it's postcard perfect.

There was only one thing missing... fish!

I found a some good-looking fishing locations. One was one of the best fishing holes I have seen in my lifetime. It was just below the rapids on an outer bend with a huge boulder shielding the torrent and was quite deep. I thought I was in for some good action.

I tried my favorites for trout... rooster tail, mepps, and even some pink salmon eggs (a la Wayne York). I nearly wore out my reel on that one hole. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. I came back for a second try an hour later with the same results.

That was a big disappointment. Maybe it was the cold morning? But it's such a beautful and promising location, I'll have to give it another try soon.

All was not lost. I quit fishing about 9:00 a.m. On the way home, I picked up a bouquet of flowers my wife. I also snared her some of her favorite breakfast pastries. Robin, the boys, and I had a pancake breakfast together. No fish, but a perfect morning otherwise.

Then my eyes were not deceiving me... beautiful spot! I'll have to go back there before DeMartine catches all the fish.

Good tip, Chris. Thanks. The water was still flowing strong. Maybe it will be better in a couple of weeks. I'll be back.

I heard from another Hooked-In member, Bob Howard, that it's tough to catch trout there when the water is high. He metioned that there are some big ones that are easier to catch later in the season when the water calms down. I'll save a few for ya!
