Tom Jean of Fitchburg shows off his 4.26 pound derby contending salmon. It was caught by trolling smelt at 10-15 feet deep.
When asked about the catch, Tom explains, "I knew it was a big one right away. So, I took my time with it."
This fish took second place away from Cody Dodds and was only 2/100ths of a pound away from AJ White's #1 fish. But there's a little more to the story... This fish could have perhaps been the biggest in the derby. It was caught at 7:00 a.m., but checked in somewhat dry at 2:35 p.m. The wildlife biologists on duty at the weigh station agree that the loss in water weight would have made all the difference and would have been significantly heavier if kept in a live well or brought right in. AJ White dodged a bullet on this one!
Nevertheless, Tom had a great day fishing with 5 good catches and had a very strong showing on day 2 of the derby.
