Hank - you inspire me - new catch page layout

Joe Pych

Despite still having 4 feet of snow standing in my yard, seeing Hank's 7 pound 10 oz bass (yes, gave you credit for those extra 10 ounces!) got me thinking that spring may come yet.  And spring means fishing!

It also inspired me to start working on some upgrades to the site I've been thinking about, but procrastinating on.  The first such improvement is to the layout of the catch page:

  • You'll now see a photo of the angler who posted the catch top left (if we have a photo)
  • You'll see photos of the members who like the catch (versus text links)
  • Removed the top advertising banner... it would be nice if the advertising actually paid for the site (it doesn't even pay half), but I was really not liking that look.
  • Other cosmetic improvements

This is the first of a number of improvements I hope to roll out in the next couple of weeks (before the fish start biting here).  It's still rough and has cosmetic issues, but wanted to get it out incrementally to avoid a big fail.

Do you like the new page layout?  See sample here.

I think it looks great. Would like to see it show the 10oz though

Thanks, scott. actually, the weights here are in decimal rounded to the tenths.  So, 7 pounds 10 ounces is 7.6 pounds.

But no matter how you count the ounces, that is one big bass!

Looks good.

While we're on the topic of site improvements...

Is there any way to manage email preferences? ie to choose whether or not we get emails for things like friends posting a catch, comments being made on that catch, etc.?

Joe,

I like the idea and the layouts. I'll echo what Jason says above, and expand: is there a way to make it easier to add/delete friends?

Also, how about an annual competition for "Hooked In Angler of the Year?"

Thanks, guys.

Great ideas to work on:

  • email preferences - I know sometimes my email box gets overwhelmed with emails.  The site should fecilitate discussion, but not be sending so many emails.  Any ideas are appreciated.
  • add/delete friends - this should be easier to manage, no question
  • Hooked-in Angler of the Year - how would we run this contest?

In meantime, I'm working on some overall design and layout changes... hopefully, you'll see these as improvements.  The idea is to minimize and simplify the navigation and controls and to maximize the main content - the catch photos and discussion!

For email preferences, you could start simple. Just a checkbox on whether to receive email updates (for friends catches, etc.) Later, you could add more granular management, if there was a need.

I like the new cleaned up front page, though I don't think it would hurt to add a few things back to the bar on the right hand side (under "Active Discussions") - there's space there to add a couple small content blocks - ie points leader, etc.

For the main content on the front page, you might also want to think about 2 or 3 catches per row instead of the current 5, so that the photos can be larger. I think the catch photos are really the "crown jewel" of the site, so why not show them off?

Keep up the good work.
