Hooked-in Angler of the Year?

Joe Pych

Hank gave me a great idea of having a Hooked-in Angler of the Year contest.  I'm not sure how best to run it in a way that we'd all feel good about.

I'm thinking that the contest should recognize members who make outstanding contributions to the site.  Great postings, quality comments, helpful ideas, sharing.  What do you think?

An obvious way to run this contest is using our points and votes system.  However, I have a problem with that.  Not naming names, but I know of cases where those systems have been "gamed" in the past.  Using points and votes alone would erode the credibility of the site and the contest.  They also do not measure the quality of the contributions made.  They can be a factor, but not the sole factor.

Anyway, I'm open to your ideas.  Let me know if you think Hooked-in Angler of the Year is a good idea and how we should run it.  Thanks.

Lower it down to 1 angler from each state than we have a poll?

Using a poll is a good idea. thanks!

Greenes Custom Rods & Tackle A poll is the best way to go.

I unleashed a genie here. This is tough. We have a good system on our Bowfin site. It wouldn;t work here for several reasons, but primarily because we target a single species. However, it does provide some guidelines:

1) Anglers must submit stories of the catch. The story can be short or long, but it has to be good.

2) The competition runs from March 1st to Oct 31 at that site, but I would make it from April 1st to Nov 1 here so as to let northern anglers have a chance early in the season.

I like Scott's idea, and I would add this to it:

- Anglers from each state only vote on anglers from their own state. (Ends Nov 1st). Whoever finishes first in each state advances to a final national round.

- Two cuts are made in the final round:

- First cut: the field is narrowed to 10 states. (ends Nov 15th).

- Between Nov 15th and Dec 1st anglers vote on the top ten. Whoever finishes first wins. Joe could send a mass email to remind everyone to vote.

Voters would vote on best fish + best story. This way, even a huge bluegill with a great story could win it all.

Just a thought.

That sounds perfect Henry

That would be great to have an angler of the year award but also maybe have a Rookie Angler of the year award.

Yea I love the ideas but I have noticed that there are quite a few younger anglers ( like myself) who use this site so a rookie category would work!!!!

All of these ideas sound good. How about number of species caught? - JUST KIDDING!

Actually, Brian, that's not a bad idea. There was an article recently about a guy who caught 1,000+ species, traveling the world and fishing. It could be a category, for most species, but like a secondary prize. Maybe Joe will consider it. I just picked up a copy of "Fishing for Buffalo," and it ahs a bucket list of all rough fish to check off after they are caught. Variety - it's the spice of life.

Somehow, creativity should play a part...some sort of nominations, and then candidates find a way to get votes. If it's just about who catches the most fish, then it is been-there-done-that all over again. I know that I have my favorite anglers on this site, and it's usually because of a neat story, or a neat twist on the photo, or just a neat something-something. The best story ever is Hank's phone call/monster Bowfin story at the 'Fin site. Some of the best photos have things other than fat fish...fingernails, dogs, pretty women, lures, fishing companions, etc.

I like Henry's idea that makes it as fair as possible, and the Rookie Angler of the Year is good idea as well, except that we do not have many anglers on this site under 18.

well maybe thats the problem....maybe we need more youth anglers. . . . . .

Greenes Custom Rods & Tackle What is to keep people from posting photos of fish they caught five years ago.

When I say rookie I don't just mean youth anglers but could be also someone that is new to fishing.

What about getting a your local bait stores involved like a check in station or take the picture of the fish with the current fishing license in the picture.  The bait store thing might be more of a problem then a solution.  Just an idea.

I think Luc's idea about rookies being more than just youngsters is great. But it also puts young kids at a disadvantage - or does it? I watched an 8 year old girl land a 10 lb Bowfin (on 4 lb test) last week. So maybe I;m wrong.

As for pictures, everyone would have to include the date/time on their pics. It's a simple function on any digital camera.

i like the idea of angler of the year i like including most species caught also but i dont like the 1 angler from each state because there seems to be a good number of active members from north carolina and would be hard to narrow that down to one before the final votes and as far as the rookie angler what would determine a rookie we have youths on here that are far from rookie anglers just some thoughts

I think that if we just keep going with this there will be more problems then solutions, maybe we should just have 1 vote maybe two for people who wish to make a rookie category but, not who catches the most , biggest, or most species, or even by state, but who, shows a dedication to quality postings and who really improves the site and makes note-worthy contributions overall

just my thought

I truly think Nick hit the nail on the head, "The angler who  shows a dedication to quality postings and who really improves the site and makes note-worthy contributions overall"  Emphasis on educational postings with quality fish and great ideas to share.
