Fishing for Buffalo

Henry V

I found a real gem guys. It's called "Fishing for Buffalo: A Guide to the Pursuit and Cuisine of Carp, Suckers, Gar, Ellpout and other Rough Fish." It has great pictures, a history of fishing for non-game fishes in the US, and a chapter by chapter breakdown of recipes, stories and techniques. Some of the other species include Drum, Burbot, Sturgeon and of course, Bowfin. The Bowfin chapter contains recipes and even stories about fly fishing for them.

I know there aren;t many "rough fish anglers" on this site, but this is good stuff for all of us to read. The book gives a sense of how important these fish are in our waters, and communicates appreciation for them with a genuine sense of fun. I'd say it's the best stuff I've read on these fishes, and definitely better than the ill-conceived Gar book that came out last year. This is an older book that went out of print in 1990, but has been republished by the University of Minnesota. Here's the link:

thanks henry i dont understand the prejudice against "rough" fish we fish for the hunt and the challenge of reeling one in and some of the best fighters are the so called rough fish

the only thing "rough" about them is the fight they put up...It makes me sad and mad when I see people happy with a 10 inch stocker trout but un-happy when a 10 lb carpĀ gives them the fight of their life...I cant comprehend it
