Just a thought i had! "Bow Fin are Bass"

Todd Harris

I am a True Bass fishing "Dont get me wrong i love to catch mostly every other fish thats able to be caught" Be ive read alot of comments from different people saying Bass are one of the easiest fish to catch and so over rated and so on and so on, I just wanted to speak my half about it! I have always heard of alot of tournaments all around the WORLD ON TV and just about everywhere, you know theres many of salt water species they go after and a few fresh water fish like Bass maybe Bowfin, hold on I dont recall a bowfin tournament.  Dont take it wrong all fish are fun to catch you cant even lie about that guys but theres millons of dallors each year won in Bass tournaments! I also know you got to key in on bass and they are very picky over the baits they bite at certain times of the year! I could bring home millons if i design a bowfin bait and put a patton on it but they bite just about anything you put in front of them. So for all the Bass and Bowfin and other certain fisherman lets agree all fish are fun to catch and we have our on opinions so  enjoy the fishing site!!!!!!!!!!!

you know me todd  you know i like to catch any and all fish but i copied this next part about not seeing a bowfin tournament....The BOWFIN packs a heck of a punch once it realizes its hooked. Did you know that in Alabama the largest freshwater tournament is a World Champion Bowfin affair? They fish them routinely and you guessed it, they eat them too. Check out the Bowfin links below. There's a Bowfin Anglers Group on the web with photos of Lake Champlain bowfin dating back to the early 1960s. heres the link for that and there were many more when i searched it......http://www.angelfire.com/home/lake/morefish.html..........now theres no disputing bass are the #1 sport fish when it comes to fresh water tournaments they have the money and are the most popular.but when it comes to sports soccers the most popular ball sport lol. but since im not fishing for supper i love any fish that will pull my drag .just my thoughts on it earl lol.

I caught a 100 pound tree branch against the current one day and I had a blast. Got my hook back and released it. Bass, Bowfin, Blowfish, Bullhead, Bonito, Bluegill, Browntrout anything is good. You have to mix it up just like women. They all need loving.

I wish Bowfin would bite anything you put in front of it, if that was true I would have caught over 200 fins this year already. They are just as picky as bass depending on the time of year. But I'll fish for anything with a stong "Pull".

I see your point Todd, but by your logic soccer is the best sport because it is the most popular in the world. And we Americans all know that football rules!

Besides, what John says is true - Bowfin are harder fighters.

And finally, there was a Bowfin bait on the market. Mann's Company designed two of them - a lipless crankbait and one with a lip. They are collector's items now, and I can;t say how well they worked. However, I do know this -  young live Bowfin are highly regarded as live bait.

yeah bowfin for sure dont bite anything. that is obviously mostly what i fish for and if that were the case i wouldnt be catching more bass than i do bowfin. i catch bass all the time when fishing for bowfin. i might go out and land 5 bass and maybe one fin or maybe none. to me bass are easy to catch and dont put up nearly the fight a bowfin will. i woudl say 90% of the bass i hook i land and as far as bowfin thats not the case. i might land 40% of the fins i hook.

I hooked 5 fins today and got them right up to my feet and lost them litterally almost in my hand. i landed 2 lmb like it was nothing. bas just give up when you get them up to you. bowfin NOT so much they fight all the way until you put them back in the water.

Just my $.02

Yes, I agree that any kind of fish is good to catch.  Fishermen like to set up tribes and hierarchy around their passion.  The main thing is to get out there fishing!

To test your bowfin are bass theory... next time you catch a bowfin, lip it like a bass and let me know your results.  Just kidding! :)

I lipped a Pickerel yesterday, next Bowfin I catch, I will lip. The next snapping turtle I catch, I am definitely testing its bite strength with my hand.  BLOOD BROTHERS FOR LIFE.

I helped my buddy land a Bowfin the other day. We got it to the bank, and I trie dto get my hand under its gill plate to grab its gullar plate bone (only Bowfin have these bones). It's the only way to land them by hand. The hard part is getting your fingers under the gill.

Anyhow, the fish went nuts and I wound up putting my thumb in its mouth. I was wearing a heavy hook proof glove, but when that fin bit down it felt like my thumb was in a vise grip. I;ve had a big pike bite me and even a bluefish, but there is nothing like a Bowfin's jaw strength. I think it's the design of their heads - they are built to bite and crush.

i saw a huge snapper pop up right in front of me today. that thing was massive. i def dont wanna try to lip that thing. lol it woudl take your finger right off.

one day i had a huge fin on and i though i was gonna lose him and i had no net or grabbers so i just jammed my hand in his mouth as quick as i could not lipped but my whole fist and just yanked him out of the water he couldnt clamp down on my hand to hard since his jaw was spread open so far if i gotta do it thats the best way. got a couple scratches from his teeth but not bad. key is dont let em get their mouth closed on youif you keep it spread open its harder for them to put a lot of pressure down. its still a bad idea though. lol. if they thrash around its gonna mess you up bad so grab em and drop em as quick as you can.

There is a researcher on Youtube who is handling a snapper and it bites his finger. Check it out. "Snapping turtle bites researcher".
