Winni Derby coming!

Joe Pych

Here's a press release from Rick Davis, Executive Director of the Winni Derby:

Lake Winnipesaukee - May 1, 2011 - Final plans are underway for the 29th Annual Winni Derby on Lake Winnipesaukee to be held on May 13-15th, 2011. Anglers from all over the U.S. will fish for Landlocked Salmon and Lake Trout.

The ice has been out awhile now and the water is warming up to be just about perfect for those feisty salmon and big Lake Trout. Trolling tandem flies at this time of year is a good way to entice a bite. Lures such as Mooselook Wobblers, Moosamaloos, Flash Kings and Sutton Spoons work well for both kinds of fish.

The Grand Prize for the largest salmon is a Princecraft Pro 165 SC boat with a 60 hp Mercury motor, trailer and state-of-the-art Lowrance depth finder.

The Major Prize for the Lake Trout Division is a check from the Laconia Rotary for $5,000.

The Major Prize for the Junior Division (under 16) is a Princecraft Fisherman 14 ft. boat, trailer and a Mercury motor.

In addition, there are lots of daily prizes and major prizes in all divisions. The daily awards ceremonies will be at the Laconia Ice Arena at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Come on down for the festivities even if you don’t have a fish entered for the day.

The weigh station is located on Lakeside Ave in the Weirs across from the Mt. Washington dock. It will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and until noon on Sunday when the derby is over.

Advance registration is required, but a late registration will be available at A.J.’s Bait & Tackle on Main Street, Meredith on Friday, May 13th. The late registration is valid for Saturday and Sunday only. Tickets may be purchased at select outlets around the lake or online at www.winniderby.com until the close of business on Thursday, May 12th. Mail registrations are accepted until May 7th.

Go online at www.winniderby.com or call 603-253-8689 for a ticket outlet nearest you. Online tickets are available until 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 12th.
