Threatened American Rivers: The Roanoke

Henry V

A new report out today names our 10 most endangered river systems. Sadly, a proposed Uranium mine in Virginia put the Roanoke River on the list. Everyone should have a look at this, and I'm calling on all Virginia and North Carolina anglers to write the VA legislature and ask them to prevent a foreign company from polluting the Roanoke River. It's easy to do, as the website provides a form letter. Be sure to mention fishing in your note, and tell those politicians to keep that company away from our fish!

this article has really pissed me off they have passed all those conservation bills to protect the river for the striper spawn then they come and do something like this its not rite and thanks henry for bringing it to our attention we live on that river and havent heard a word about it this would also include roanoke rapids lake and lake gaston because it would go through there to get to the river

Well John it's not done yet. The mining company says they are going to plan for drilling, so I guess they think they will get the permission they need. As of now, they can't do it because it would be illegal. So we need to stop the lawmakers from changing the law. Tell everyone about this nonsense, and save the river. If they pollute it, you'll never get the top spot in the points! :)

On a related note, the NC senate is talking about allowing hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking" for gas near my fishing holes in the Triangle. If they do, I will be one angry angler. That type of mining has ruined countless trout streams in NY/PA. It's bad stuff because it's guaranteed pollution, without any doubt. I'd rather take my chance with uranium mining than have fracking around here.

Thank you for Henry V for highlighting our report on Hooked-in!  We can't risk contaminating the water supply for citizens in southern Virginia.  We have heard industry guarantees before that they will develop resources such as this safely.  This area is not the appropriate place to do that; the cost is too great.  The VA legislature should uphold the ban on uranium mining to protect the Roanoke and clean water statewide.  To see how you can help, please visit http://bit.ly/endangeredrivers

Yep, that's it. The WRAL story is better than the industry propaganda I read in the Fayateville paper today.  The Fayeteville story made it sound like everyone would get rich once they started fracking. I saw what fracking did in Pennsylvania. It doesn't make you rich - it makes you sick.

Anyhow, the Deep River basin is the one around the Uwharrie National Forest, which is beautiful and has some of the best smallmouth fishing in the state.
