Do bigger lures catch bigger fish or are there other more important variables??

We are seeing some bigger fish caught on some very large lures! Is this really the way to go or are there other tricks to try?

I have caught 5" fish on 10" worms, and bigger fish on tiny jigs and spinners. This site is full of pictures and stories of big fish that anglers caught using small baits(a lot of times fishing for a different species)I think  it is all about presentation, food source, time of year(and day),...I know big swim baits are popular for big bass but sometimes small finesse presentations just work better for big fish...of course this is just my experience

i think it depends on the fish when we catfish we definitly believe in the bigger bait for the bigger fish it keeps the small ones of the hooks and is only big enough for the 30 to 40 pounders were after to take

I think John is right. It depends on the fish.  I've seen some big trout caught on size22 or smaller flies.  But I've alos seen like 40inch stripers caught with 9inch lures.
