On a scale of 1 - 10 get a lighter 2-3 kit to make it fun! I would go with a used set up from ebay. Just in case it doesn't jive for you I respect the fact that you are going to try something new! Next you'll get a striper on a fly out of the surf off a surf board.

I've been thinking about giving fly fishing a go too. A friend of mine let me borrow a quick guide to fly fishing titled the Curtis Creek Manifesto by Sheridan Anderson. I put together like a comic book, but it's acutally really informative and entertaining. It's worth a read.

Fly fishing delivers the greatest reward. The reason is simple: you work hard to learn the techniques, and when you finally catch a trout it feels like you landed a whale. Once you grow comfortable with it, the rhythm of casting, wading and landing fish is sweet music. And the fly fishing literature is the gold standard for angling books.

Good luck, and enjoy!
