kinda polling /question...

Ok, yes i have not been here near as long as the great regulars that i have learned a lot from , let us get this clear, i really enjoy and grateful for this site.

My Question was born from the map topic , on Joe not breaking even.

Here goes: Why not buy good quality Lures, line , Tackle , Yes Fishing equiptment , have our reviews from regular Fishing Guys,(yes that includes the Gals, with respect), I for one would commit and would enjoy buying fishing goodies right here.

Joe , you could have a store connected here, yes it is  a lot more work, but there are a lot of ways to skin that cat, and i don't know if it would hurt your chances of Sponsors on your Fishing , that is another question.

Hey if i am all wet so be it, no problem just trying to help , another 2 cents to consider .

Best Regards, AJ ,(the Pajama Fisherman.)

Joe Pych

Hi, AJ.

Thanks for the ideas and support!

First of all, don't get me wrong - I'm not complaining that the site is losing money. It's not a lot of money and I write it off in my mind as a hobby (it's not a bad habit).  It's on me to fix that problem and I have to admit that I've not put enough effort into that lately.  My day job and family have been taking priority.  My comment earlier was in response to getting rich off the site which is not the case and I was responding in jest.

That said...

I've thought about the idea of an online tackle store.  I think that would be really hard.  When I looked into it a while back, I noticed there were not too many tackle shops online.  Sure, there's Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops, but Dick's does not even sell tackle online - you have to go to their store.  Maybe I'm wrong, but seems that's a tough business.

We have an online store for t-shirts, mugs, stickers... I think it's good to have that from a branding standpoint, but it has yet to bring any revenue.  We make only $1 when a t-shirt is sold - cafe press (the vendor) keeps the rest.  But they do all the work.

Regarding sponsors... that is definitely a workable idea.  The challenge there is to get the site's audience to a level that's interesting to a sponsor.  I was just looking at some stats and in May 2011 the site had more than 20,000 unique visitors and 110,000 page views.  That may sound like a lot, but it's just getting to the level that starts to get interesting to sponsors.  In the meantime, I've been running Google Adsense ads in the right rail, but frankly I'm not impressed with the ads I see (I have no control of what is shown) and they don't make much money.

So, the challenge is to build up the audience to a level where we can get a real sponsor or two.  I think the solution is to make the website even better and to make it easier for members to spread the word to their friends.

What do you think?

I like the idea of improving the site but I still think it is a great site and would be difficult to improve even though I haven't been on the site in a while. (Due to schoolwork) But, the idea of the online store I do not think would be a very good idea. Anybody who shops online for  fishing supplies either shops at Bass Pro Shops, Cabelas or Gander Mountain. I think it would be too difficult for you to draw in enough consumers for the products that you would be selling.  The site from what you posted does not get many new visitors and very few of them would actually, so what I am getting at is no don't do an online store. But, improving the site would be really cool I would like to see what kind of new things you could think of adding to the site. Also one thing I thought about was having a hooked-in app for apple and android products. I don't know if you could do that or not but it would be really cool.

Hope this helps

Dennis Huskins

You know information is king. I'm sure fishing gear companies want to know a lot about what we do, what we buy, what we believe in, and how we spend our money. I emailed the president of Mepps Micheal Sheldon and told him he could check our site and find out how many different fish in what % were caught on a Mepps spinner. He emailed me back, thanking me for the information, and said he was impressed with the site and the use of his lures. There has to be money to be made by selling our stats and the use and choice of our equipment. They also may choose to advertise on our site after they are drawn to it..

Greenes Custom Rods & Tackle

How about opening the site to people who make Rod's and Tackle to showcase there wares.

Mr. Greene , sorry don't know your first name , yes i think if Joe decides to showcase products that we would enjoy and learn from your Rod and Tackle products to fish better , i for one would like to see Joe trying out products and maybe some of us members as well, that one group North American Fisherman, i think that is the name, charges a fee to be a member and passes out products from sponsors to try out , i am not a member, but here there are possiblities to see and read hands on views .  This Hobby /Profession for some, is one of the most Fun out there when you think about it, gets you out in Nature and we need to share this with Kids to get them away from all the Techy stuff which makes the Children Couch Potatoes . Having our Children or taking one out is key to the Future of our American wilderness, now i am on another topic -OOPs!

Dennis, i am glad you  wrote/contacted  Mepps, have liked those lures since i was a Kid, yes that is a long time!

John, yes versitility is helpful, developing apps are time consuming and or costly, maybe you can get one of your College Buddies to do this to help out Joe. Glad to see you here John.

Joe , i am sure most members are very thankful for you putting up this site, appreciate what you do, and i know it is a lot of work, i have had a Biz site way back in '99, then again in 2003, it takes a large amount of time and effort. Maybe it is time for a straight out Fishing Portal conduit to either create, or  if not out there or hook-up with, just my Dos Pesos, in my case 2 Latkes , lol.. in any case Wish you Success Joe in all Things, especially Fishing, lol.

HAve Fun and Enjoy the upcoming Spring Fishing, I for one can't wait to catch some Bass on that creek that supplied us with some good meals and Fun Fishing!   AJ

PS i am so Jealous ,heard a Friend of mine who works at a Dock on the White River,N. Arkansas, Bull Shoals Lake,  below the Dam, caught a 35inch Brown trout on a count down Rapala about 2-3inches long lure trout colored -he was stoked because it was his lunch hour and just took out a jon boat for a short spin, lol. I will try to get his phone pic up here. Yes he released it for another day......
