Snakehead vs Bowfin

Henry V

This is posted specifically for DELMARVA anglers, but everyone else might be interested.

The Maryland DNR is offering a bounty to anglers who catch and kill invasive Snakehead fish. As some of you know, Snakeheads are a menace to most other species.

The problem is that some misinformed anglers will almost certainly mistake the native -and necessary - Bowfin for snakeheads, and mistakenly kill Bowfins instead. This would be bad for native eco-systems. In addition, it is counter-productive, as Bowfin are one of the few formidable native predatory fish who can eat larger Snakeheads.

So spread the word: Snakehead no, Bowfin yes!

here is a link to the bounty story:

There is an easy way to tell the difference between the two fish., by the way.

Snakehead has a very long anal fin as well as a long dorsal fin.

Bowfin only has a long dorsal fin. Its anal fin is very short.
