Schoolie striper baits?

Raul S.

Hey everyone, I'm looking to up my striper game this year, starting with the arrival of schoolers later in the month and into May, so I need a little help. What are your favorite baits for schoolies? Thanks.

Ok thanks, do you fish the clam under a float?

I like blood worms or fresh clam fished on a fish finder rig with a circle hook or just a circle hook and a split shot. Just don't cast too far away from the structure you are fishing, many times they are within a few feet of the rocks. If using clam use fresh only that you pull out of the shell, hook it one time only through the tounge and flip it out. Don't make a clam ball out of your bait. Don't be surprised if something big grabs onto your bait either. I've gotten spooled a few times fishing for them little schoolies.

And sorry to keep asking questions, but do you fish it off the bottom? Or keep it near the surface? Thanks

On the bottom, using a fish finder rig(weight slides up the line so the fish doesn't feel the tension).

If fishing DE river I use whole bloods on a fishfinder until the white perch become a problem, then switch to half whole followed by fake. The smell of the real stuff draws them in and the fake gives them a nice fat target.Whole bloods works better, but they can be pretty exepnsive to feed to the swarms of white perch. I like to use my old penn spinner on a no name 2 pc surf castin rod here with 10 lb mono with a fishfinder rig and fluro leader. Most keeper in the river I get are about just legal to 30". However, I tend to put all river fish back since they are heading up to spawn.

If fishing off a jetty or the rocks of a inlet in the salt whole bloods, but prefer to use surf clams. ater temps here play a bigger part and seem to have better luck with bloods early on until it warsm a little. I like to just use a split shot or two about 24" above the hook and flick it out close to the structure and let drift along. Always use a good circle hook for this fishing for releasing the schoolies and holding on to that one keeper that slams your little schoolie rod. Most keepers seem to be 30-36 inches and are lots fun on the light tackle. I use a ABU 6500 baitcaster on shimano compre rod with 15LB diamond mono and 30# flurocarb leader,

Been doing the same thing for years each spring and it works for me. My takle box is simple and works for both areas. Quality circle hooks, fluro leader, small barrel swivles, fishfinders, split shots, and bank sinkers to 4oz, bait knife, and pliers.  The only extra thing I carry to the salt is some small diamond jigs or hopkins for when a school of bluefish invade.

The only thing I like better than spring striper fishing is fall diamond jigging for blues and bass on a head boat.
