I am opposed to bowfishing unless the fish are used....I have seen people with hundreds of fish destined for the dump...SAD.....as far as gar fishing, Use cut bait, use stout tackle(you need to set the hook like you never have before). Most of the time they "play" with the bait before taking it...I have had bites last 10 minutes....be careful when landing, sometimes they fight more after being landed, and the teeth, gill plates and scales will cut you to ribbons

me and my son sometimes target gar we have 2 approaches because of there bony beak its hard to just set a hook in them so one way we do it is let them take the bait and wait 10 or more minutes for them to work the bait to there mouth circle hooks help for this because the set thereselves in the corner of the mouth you still need a leader or they will cut your line.the 2nd way which works better is we make a "nest" out of spider braid line and tie it to the top of the hook and surround the bait with it when they take the bait you set the hook slightly and the line gets tangled in there teeth you never actually get them with the hook its more to hold the bait we have caught a number of gar this way so it works for us hope this helps

John , I like the nest idea... here in La, there are actually gar lures with no hooks in them... basiclly a piece of rope that has been un-twisted and the gar just bite down and get tangled
